For Simon Morris; His Name Means First And Last.

Following the death of one of Theirselves, various failures and ever deepening reliances, VUKOVAR have finally emerged once more. With the disintegration of the old group, a new, stable line up - the NeuPopAct - have collided and colluded to here present ‘THE COLOSSALIST’, their 8th LP and part one of the Eternity Ends Here triptych; the most ambitious thing attempted by the group and the most wrapped in turmoil.

VUKOVAR have reunited with OTHER VOICES RECORDS, a label to match the group’s ambition, to bring out this first CD in a planned series of releases in collaboration with world renowned artist Andrzej Klimowski. ‘THE COLOSSALIST’ is out on the 15th November.

VUKOVAR formed in a crumbling placefiller of a town in 2014. They were always dying and reorganized after cease to exist in 2019. Effete artists pretending to be northern hardcases pretending to be uniform fetishists in iconoclast drag. "Do not trust us; we are fragile stars."

All songs written and recorded by the 5/5 of Vukovar (except Hearing Voices written by Galaxie 500 and rewritten by Vukovar). Engineered and produced by The Brutalist House And The Ghosts In Their Machine. Mastered by Phil Reynolds. Hearing Voices features Simon Morris taken from various interviews and archive material.

Artwork by Andrzej Klimowski. Layout by Oleg Galay.

Regular readers shouldn't expect any Jangling Pop Guitar. This is Pensive Dark Pop, challenging you to think. I can only name a few bands who would take you down this path. Vukovar sell themselves short at times and surround themselves in mystery too much. Everyone should know about them.

The Colossalist is a fine, fine album. Vukovar’s best to date without a doubt. Any imperfections are perfect, any moments off-key are perfectly in tune, and any mistakes are intended. The band continue to release essential listening.

Vukovar do catchy tunes and they do moody walking tunes, the kind where the vocals are submerged under masses of reverb and recorded as if sung through a bullhorn from half a mile away, all glued to spacious bass runs and random drum hits. This is Vukovar’s eighth album but their first for quite some while because seeing one of your bandmates shuffle off this mortal coil isn’t something you just take in your stride. They’re still here though and thats a good thing.

Vukovar know their way around a pop song, they just serve them in strips wrapped in dirt. One part industrial, one part post-punk synthplay, and equal parts turmoil and fear.

Eight albums comprise their opus, from Emperor (2015) till The Colossalist, eight pieces of a very personal musical universe that has always surprised us, moved us and even frightened us. The Colossalist is a very interesting and complex work that will delight all of us who still don’t like easy things.

This album grows more compelling with repeated listenings. The innate sadness, its wistfulness, gets less disembodying with each piece and each play until the entirety washes over the you. As different as it is intoxicating, not mainstream, not for everyone, experimental, a must listen to essential album.

Vukovar, oh Vukovar, bless you for existing, bless you for subverting the very concept of music, bless you for not being afraid to scare, to twist the listener’s mind, for taking us on magickal journeys. And bless you for the sheer delight of what you make, craft, compose and play.

So, ‘The Colossalist’ LP is a black crude diamond on Vukovar‘s will. An amazing and outstanding work by all means. Here we go, listen close, listen loud!!!

Dazzling bright synth beams sweep relentlessly with urgent icy drama, sharpened by hissing off-kilter steady rhythms woven with a hypnotically obsessive tight bassline, over haunting emotional male vocals, haloed in high pitched ethereal female exhalations, as they cynically reveal disbelief in a life beyond the veil, amid the churning, reverb fused auras of ominous disconnection. — WL//WH

The Colossalist I’m glad to confirm is another quality expansive work of art from one of the country’s most criminally underrated bands.

Vukovar -The Double Cross The band that should be kings are back with a world weary trawl of Scott Walker in leather trousers and shades like goth synth pop .all down at heel glamour , a song worthy of a Wim Wenders wide screen shot a song to evoke many emotions all of them steeped in tear stained melancholia
