For Simon Morris; His Name Means First And Last.

Following 'THE COLOSSALIST' and continuing the death-life commitment to their grave loss, VUKOVAR's next step in their obsessive memorial device to Simon Morris is 'THE GREAT IMMUREMENT'. With the new, stable line up, here with Jane Appleby (CERAMIC HOBS), the NeuPopAct have collided and colluded to now present their 9th LP and part two of the Eternity Ends Here triptych; the most ambitious thing attempted by the group and the most wrapped in turmoil.

OTHER VOICES RECORDS, a label to match the group’s ambition, bring out this second CD in a planned series of releases in collaboration with world renowned artist Andrzej Klimowski. ‘THE GREAT IMMUREMENT’ is out on the 23rd April 2021.

VUKOVAR formed in a crumbling placefiller of a town in 2014. They were always dying and reorganized after cease to exist in 2019. Effete artists pretending to be northern hardcases pretending to be uniform fetishists in iconoclast drag. "Do not trust us; we are fragile stars."

Jane Appleby appears on 'The Great Immured And His Sea Of Love'. Simon Morris appears on 'Cement & Cerement'.

All songs written and recorded by the 5/5 of Vukovar.
Except:
'When Rome Falls' lyrics written by D. Tibet and music by Vukovar.
'Psalm' taken from 'Psalm 142' by David and music by Vukovar.
Excerpt from 'O Eden' taken from 'And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief As Photos' by John Berger.

Engineered and produced by The Brutalist House & The Ghosts In Their Machine and Phil Reynolds. Mastered by Phil Reynolds.

Artwork by Andrzej Klimowski. Layout by Oleg Galay.

'achingly beautiful and tranquil in places, chaotic and discombobulating in others, the latest album from the arcane Vukovar is a real gauntlet of experience...With heavenly synthlines, impassioned vocals and drums that seem to have been recorded in a cavernous, Victorian service reservoir, The Great Immurement is a deeply emotional and anguished record that pushes the listener to the borderlands of cohesion before centring back with some exquisite, if heavy-hearted, respites.'

'They continue to plough a lonely furrow – like nothing else out there... What is remarkable about Vukovar is their ability to keep producing albums of such high quality... Once more Vukovar prove that they are a force to be reckoned with. Whether the masses discover them or not is probably irrelevant. In the here and now, The Great Immurement is an album borne out of turmoil, loss and obsession.'

‘The Great Immurement’s opening trilogy of songs is perhaps the best sonic stretch of recent albums... There’s a predominant thickness and width to the sound, a solidified texture and tone... This new wave of no-wave, the cavernous sounds, leave a stain like a strange kind of imprint.'

The tracks on this album are fascinating sonic sculptures of atmosphere, lamentation, and collective spiritual awakening.

A brutalist romantic anthem from the crypt of mental fatigue.
And so most of the album’s music seems to smoother, even overpower with an echo chamber of reverberated voices, malingering traces of spirits, competing opinions and fallen angels.

Their rare sound, which inherits the traditional UK post-punk such as Joy Division and Morrissey, experimental industrial such as Coil, and the neofolk mood represented by Death in June, transcends time and genre.

The Great Immurement is a wonderful embodiment of performance Pop art and one that has not been seen since the days of Shakin Stevens on Top Of The Pops backed by semi naked male dancers ..but who knows what the future holds for the emotional gothic soap opera ride that is Vukovar .whatever it is i am pretty sure it is not going to be boring..

Vukovar is the only band that sounds as personal yet as disturbing as Coil, with every new album surprising us. Again, this album succeeds in the difficult task of mixing some more conventional songs and melodies with the unique sonic treatment of the band, with their facility to create disturbing atmospheres in just a synth pop track. The Great Immurement can be only a last goodbye, but farewells have really touched us as much.

And even if it is somewhat more accessible it still displays the usual obsessive attention to detail in the way the songs are put together. And perhaps even more care has been taken as the sense of darkness is more subtle than it has been in the past and this makes it, at least to my ears, all the more effective. There is a sense of holding back in the sound, a feeling that the layers of sound have not been taken as far as they could go, that the sound on sound on sound has not been allowed to overwhelm.

This is a thing of dark beauty. Of sound sculpted into something beyond music; into pure sonic expression.
